A grant scheme offered by the Irish Government called the Housing Adaptation Grant for people with a disability is available for people with a physical, sensory, mental health or intellectual disability.
The good news is the grant doesn't require you to own your own home, the criteria is as follows:
Privately owned (you or your family own it);
Rented from a landlord with a current tenancy agreement registered with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) and you have the landlord’s permission to make the changes;
Provided by an Approved Housing Body (a list of these can be found at www.housing.gov.ie);
A communal residence – accommodation where people live together in group homes.

The grant should be available to provide funds to adapt your home to build a sensory room or space for a family member(s) with Autism or Sensory Processing Disorder. Click on the link below which will bring you to Dublin City Councils' site with a downloadable application form. This form is genetic as it is a government of Ireland initiative so regardless of your location in Ireland this form is applicable to you.
The best advice SuperCalm can offer is to contact your local county council authority's main offices for advice on the most efficient way to apply for this government national grant scheme. If you have any difficulties contacting the main offices then contact (call or email or both!) your local county counselors' offices directly for advice or assistance, their information will be available on the county councils website. Persistence will be well worth the effort if you can offer your family member the benefits of a sensory space.
